MEA Apostille Services

Internationally Recognized Document Authentication

An Apostille is an internationally recognized certificate issued under the Hague Convention of 1961 that authenticates the origin of a public document. In India, the Ministry of External Affairs is the competent authority responsible for issuing Apostilles for eligible documents after the prescribed authentication has been completed by the appropriate authorities.

An Apostille certifies the authenticity of the signature, official seal, or stamp appearing on a document. It does not validate the contents of the document itself. Documents bearing an Apostille are generally accepted in countries that are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, subject to the laws and requirements of the destination country.

Our team helps clients understand the applicable requirements, review their documents, coordinate the authentication process, and assist throughout the Apostille procedure.

An Apostille is an official certificate issued under the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, 1961. It confirms the authenticity of the signature, seal, or official capacity of the authority that issued or authenticated the document.

For countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention, an Apostille generally eliminates the requirement for embassy legalization. However, the acceptance of an Apostilled document remains subject to the legal requirements of the destination country.

An Apostille is commonly required when Indian documents are to be presented before authorities in countries that recognize Apostilles under the Hague Convention.

Common purposes include:

  • Higher education abroad
  • Employment overseas
  • Immigration and residence applications
  • Student visas
  • Family and dependent visas
  • Marriage registration
  • International business transactions
  • Company incorporation
  • Commercial contracts
  • Export and import documentation
  • Legal proceedings in foreign jurisdictions

Our team helps clients determine whether an Apostille or Embassy Attestation is appropriate based on the destination country.

In India, Apostilles are issued by the Ministry of External Affairs after the document has been authenticated by the competent State authority or other designated authority, depending on the category of the document.

The Ministry issues the Apostille only after the prescribed preliminary verification has been completed in accordance with the applicable procedures.

Our team assists clients in completing every stage of this process while ensuring that the required documentation is properly prepared.

The eligibility of a document depends upon the applicable legal requirements and the destination country.

The Apostille procedure generally consists of two stages.

Step One

The document is authenticated by the competent authority depending on its category.

For educational documents, authentication is generally carried out by the designated educational authority or the competent State authority.

For personal documents, authentication is generally carried out by the Home Department, General Administration Department, or other competent authority, as applicable.

For commercial documents, authentication is generally carried out by the concerned Chamber of Commerce before submission for Apostille.

Step Two

After the required authentication has been completed, the document is submitted for Apostille before the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Ministry examines the previous authentication and, where the applicable requirements are satisfied, issues the Apostille certificate.

Our team assists clients throughout the complete procedure, from document review to final delivery.

The documents required depend upon the category of the document and the destination country.

Commonly required documents include:
